Massachusetts has enacted a law that changes the previous limitations on obtaining an abortion. It is being hailed as absolute protection of women's right to make decisions about their healthcare without interference from the government. Interesting that the crowd looking for the government to run everything, control everything, wants them to stay out of the abortion decision.
Make no mistake; this is not about healthcare. This is about convenience. The previous law, like many other state laws, limited abortions after 24 weeks to defined categories. Risk to the patient's life, physical or mental health, or lethal/severe fetal diagnosis. The medical professional had to be able to identify and diagnose a specific health issue in order to justify the procedure. Rather than identifying a specific medical condition, a doctor can use the broad statement that the procedure was medically necessary based upon their clinical assessment and accepted standards of care.
Here is the interesting and terrifying provision of the law that concerns many of us: the doctor's assessment is not subject to review. Now there doesn't have to be a specific diagnosis, like there is in any other medical situation to justify the procedure, but no one can review or question the doctor's decision. That is an open door to eugenics, selective breeding, whatever you want to call it. None of them are good.
I know it won't happen frequently, but it will happen. A woman is experiencing a difficult labor, she is emotional. She decides to end it right there. Abort the baby. Or she panics, finally realizing what is about to happen to her life, how it will change. That's believable given how many recent generations are raised to believe there are no consequences to their actions and when reality smacks them in the face, they look for a way out.
When I posted my opinion on social media, the responses were typical. I was told I'm a man and can't understand what a woman goes through. Or that this wouldn't happen, despite the doctor in Virginia saying he had performed and would perform again, abortions not only up to the moment of birth, but immediately after birth. Every criticism of my opinion had one thing in common; they ignored the child.
If I were to kill a woman that was pregnant, I can be charged with two counts of murder. If a man punched a pregnant woman in the stomach causing the baby to die, that's a murder charge. A man decides he doesn't want the responsibility of the child, so he slips a woman an abortion drug, even before the fetus is even remotely considered viable, that's a murder charge.
But let a woman decide at the last second that she wants to end the pregnancy for any reason, right up to the moment of birth, that is not murder, that medical treatment. Make it make sense, using science and logic, not vapid emotionally based arguments that emphasize feelings. Especially since anyone supporting this law never considers the feelings of the child.
This is murder. Doctors and mothers can now get away with it, and it is not subject to review. Now it has become state sanctioned murder. Is that the society in which we want to live?
