Dear Editor,
The Trout Fire of 2025 was a wakeup call for residents. The wildfire spread quickly and affected many: volunteer fire-fighters worked tirelessly for two weeks alongside state and federal units, locals housed evacuees and their pets, people organized food delivery. The risk of dangerous fire in our area may have worsened since then, as the drought continues. We have all seen large stands of trees that have died in the last year. Climate change is not something that will affect us in the future – we are living through it now.

The New Mexico legislature is currently considering the Clear Horizons Act, Senate Bill 18. This bill asks industries that contribute to heat-trapping pollution, and make profits operating in our state, to protect our families, our economy, and our land by working to ensure that steps are taken to reduce the emissions that are contributing to climate change. Many industries in the state claim in their annual reports that they are taking steps to protect our people and our land. Responsibility and accountability are welcome, and the legislation helps establish standards of measurement, and straightforward guidelines.

Our governor recently said that the bill isn't just about the environment – it's about economic stability and long-term planning. Residents who have seen dramatic rate increases in homeowners' insurance, or have had their policies canceled due to fire risks, can understand this. Please call on Senator Ramos and Representative Terrazas to support the Clear Horizons Act this legislative session.

Sincerely,
Christine Brickley
