Friday, April 07, 2017, 06:00pm |
The doors will open at 5:30pm, 30 minutes before performance time. Space is limited and will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. The event will be an exploration of music from various Mexican music traditions and from the U.S./Mexico border. The concert is free and open to the public. Maria McCullough and Yahví Pichardo are longtime educators and practitioners of community music whose repertoire includes music from the U.S./Mexico border, Son Jarocho (Veracruz), and Son Calentano (Michoacan/Guerrero). They are both multi-instrumentalists and vocalists and taught at the world renowned Old Town School of Folk Music before moving to the Southwest. They co-founded Carambola Community Music (carambolacommunitymusic.org) in El Paso in October of 2015, where they get to share their love of music by teaching people of all ages. These players have deep roots and connections to the music and instruments they play. They have traveled to Mexico for the past 12 years studying with master musicians. Their instrumentation includes fiddle, guitar, jarana, voice, percussion and marimbol. You can learn more about Maria y Yahví and their ongoing projects at: mariayahvi.com.
