“A Unitarian Universalist Easter Celebration,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City
Sunday, April 17, 2022, 10:00am |
Reverend Claudia Elferdink will look to Asia, Europe and the United States to answer a question: “How do Unitarians and Universalists celebrate Easter?”
For a religious community that has no creed, this is an intriguing question. Elferdink will talk about the beliefs and practices of people from the Philippines, Northern Ireland, England, Transylvania and across the United States, including Silver City.
“For a tradition centered on heart and mind, faith and science we will get a look at how Easter is celebrated in radically different cultures. With a deeper look, will we find Unitarians and Universalists are surprisingly similar, or not?” Elferdink said.
“Since the 1600s Unitarians have been marking Easter Sunday. In the last two centuries it has become controversial, especially in some congregations in the U.S. My international U/UU research may reveal some surprises.” She added.
Rev. Claudia Elferdink is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister living in Silver City with her spouse John Egnal, their adult children and five grandchildren. She studied at UC Santa Barbara, the College of Wooster in Ohio, Antioch Graduate School of Education in Philadelphia and Harvard Divinity School. She served congregations in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
She is a published historian focusing her research on uncovering Unitarian Women whose lives and work crossed international borders. Currently Elferdink is a Coordinator of the “Reckoning International Unitarian and Universalist Histories Project.” She collaborates with Rev. Dr. Lehel Molnar, the Archivist at the Unitarian Archives in Kolozsvar, now commonly called Cluj, Romania.
