A Thin Red Line: How has economic segregation influenced Silver City and the surrounding area

Download as iCal file

Saturday, May 21, 2022, 11:00am - 12:00pm

This program is presented in partnership with the Silver City Museum, the recognized focal point for local history in this area. (www.silvercitymuseum.org.)

Presented by Javier Marrufo; Saturday, May 21, 11 a.m. - noon at the Silco, 311 N. Bullard St., Silver City. Masks are mandatory. Zoom participation is available. See Registration Link below.

Silver City Museum Curator Javier Marrufo will begin this two-part program with “Chihuahua Hill: A Case Study in Division,” a presentation that examines the history of economic segregation in Silver City and its surrounding areas. The second part is a community conversation that occurs after a brief intermission and features a panel of guest commentators composed of stakeholders in the community.

Marrufo received his BA in history from Western New Mexico University in 2016 and plans to obtain a MA in history from the same institution by 2023. His interest in history stems from his love of southwestern New Mexico. As a child, Marrufo was enamored by the intricately painted black and white pottery of the Mimbreños, the tragic tale of Geronimo during the heroic defense of his homeland, and most of all, the countless stories of happiness in the face of great inequality from the mouths of his elders. “With my connection to the area and love of its history, I am truly fortunate that my career path allows me to study its history, and to make meaningful contributions to our community,” he said.
