“A Somewhat Duskier Skin: Mary Seacole in the Crimea,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Sunday, June 19, 2022, 10:00am |
June 19, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “A Somewhat Duskier Skin: Mary Seacole in the Crimea”
In the 1850s, war broke out in the Crimea, involving Russia, Turkey, France, and Great Britain. Mary Seacole, a Jamaican British citizen, decided to put her skills as a doctoress to use by volunteering to serve overseas. Traveling to London, she found a level of prejudice that would have stymied her plans had Seacole not been of a determined nature. Dr. Campbell will talk about the challenges she faced, and how she overcame them.
Besides teaching History at WNMU and UNM, Dr. Campbell has given many lectures for the Silver City Museum and the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning. For the latter, she has the honor of providing more classes to participants than anyone else in the program's history. She has been a local history researcher for many years.
Please join us before the June 19 Sunday service for the first in a series of drum circles commemorating the four solar festivals of the year. We’ll be meeting on the Fellowship patio at 9:30 am for a Summer Solstice (Litha) celebration. All are welcome. Bring your drums, rattles, bells, and other percussion instruments. Or else you can use your chanting voice and your dancing moves. No formal program - let’s just let nature take its course!
There are speakers on the patio if you wish to enjoy the service outside.
UUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA Guidelines:
We will not be serving food or drinks in the building until further notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoors and out, except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refreshments on the patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.
