“Tom Lyons: The Murderous Cattle Baron of Grant County” with Dr. Stephen Fox

Download as iCal file

Wednesday, October 26, 2022, 12:00pm - 01:00pm

From the 1880s until his death in 1917, Tom Lyons was the reigning cattle baron of Grant County. His LC Ranch in the northwest corner of the county stretched across a range of 40 miles by 60 miles. When smaller ranchers came close to the edges of his ranch, Lyons sometimes had them killed. But this nasty habit never got him indicted and never made the local newspapers. Recently discovered testimony in the oral history interviews conducted by Lou Blachly here in the 1950s confirms the longtime rumors about Lyons’s unpunished crimes.

A historian from Boston, Stephen Fox and his wife, Alexandra Todd, have lived in Silver City since 2008. Although he moved here to retire, a historian is always a historian. He has done various projects in Grant County history, such as an article on segregation and discrimination against Hispanics since 1870 that was published in the Spring 2019 issue of the New Mexico Historical Review. His research on Tom Lyons has turned up an interesting case of how history gets written and not written.
