Andrew Phillip Calanchi
September 17, 2026 — Sixth Judicial District Attorney Norman R. Wheeler announced that 40-year-old Andrew Phillip Calanchi is being held without bond in Luna County after being charged with:
Count 1: Attempt to commit Murder, (1st Degree Felony),
Count 2: Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, (3rd Degree Felony),
Count 3: Tampering with Evidence, (2nd Degree Felony),
Count 4: Tampering with Evidence, (3rd Degree Felony),
Count 5: Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon (Petty Misdemeanor).
On August 26, 2026, Deming police responded to a call about a male subject shot in the face with a firearm. Several witnesses advised police that Adrian Mora was shot by a known assailant: Andrew Calanchi.
Chief Deputy District Attorneys Cashmala Fazal and George Zsoka represented the State during the Preliminary and Pre-Trial Detention hearing on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The Honorable Jennifer Delaney of the Sixth Judicial District Court presided over the hearing and granted the State's Motion for Pretrial Detention. Judge DeLaney determined that Calanchi poses a danger to the community and is a risk to the victim.
The court found sufficient evidence to bind Calanchi over for trial on all four original counts. The court also granted the state's motion to add an additional charge of Tampering with Evidence based on evidence presented at the preliminary hearing. Calanchi will remain in custody until the case concludes or the court orders otherwise.
