Silver City, NM – Gila Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is pleased to announce that the High Desert Humane Society Animal Shelter and Adoption Center has been selected as the recipient of the Gila Regional CARES Program Q3 donation, funded through proceeds generated by cafeteria sales.
The Gila Regional CARES Program reflects GRMC's commitment to giving back to the communities it serves by supporting local nonprofit organizations that are making a meaningful impact throughout Grant County.
On October 7, 2026, GRMC senior leadership presented the Q3 donation check to the High Desert Humane Society during a visit to the shelter. Board President Heidi Ogas led the group on a tour of the facility and shared information about the organization's programs, services, and impact across the region.
Located at 3050 Cougar Way in Silver City, the shelter provides animal adoption services, operates the HALT (Halt a Litter Today) spay/neuter program, offers reduced-cost drive-through vaccination clinics on the second Saturday of every month, and provides pet cremation services, including both private and communal options. The organization also maintains a memorial wall where community members can honor a pet's memory by adding their pet's name for a $15 donation.
Beyond its animal care services, the High Desert Humane Society serves as New Mexico's first state-approved Animal Housing Resource Center, helping coordinate animal sheltering, livestock support, and emergency response planning during disasters.
"The High Desert Humane Society does incredible work for our community's animals and the families who care for them," said Robert Whitaker, CEO of Gila Regional Medical Center. "From adoption services and affordable pet care to disaster response planning, their impact reaches far beyond the shelter. We are honored to support their mission through this quarter's GRMC CARES donation."
Community members interested in adopting, volunteering, or learning more about available services can visit the shelter at 3050 Cougar Way in Silver City or call 575-538-9261.
