(Glenwood, NM, August 19, 2026) — Beginning Monday, Aug. 24, Bighorn and Cosmic campgrounds along US-180 north of Glenwood will temporarily close while crews install shade ramadas. This upgrade will provide sheltered, covered areas for visitors at these campgrounds with limited tree cover. The campgrounds are expected to reopen on Saturday, Aug. 29, construction permitting.

Heavy machinery will be operating within the campgrounds throughout the installation period to dig foundations and move construction materials. For public and worker safety, please do not enter either campground while construction is underway.

Alternative developed camping access is available at Cottonwood Campground, approximately 11 miles north of Cosmic Campground. Primitive, dispersed camping sites exist along many Forest Service roads in the area. Please ensure campfires are fully extinguished before you leave and pack out all trash. For more camping information in the area, please call the Glenwood Ranger District at 575-539-2481.
