(Silver City, NM — September 9, 2026) – The Gila, Lincoln, and Cibola National Forests continue to seek civic‑minded individuals to serve on the Southern New Mexico Resource Advisory Committee (RAC). The committee helps guide federal funding in local projects that improve public lands, strengthen communities, and support natural resource stewardship.
We have received many strong applicants to serve on the RAC, and we sincerely thank those who have already applied. In the interest of assembling the most representative group for the committee, we are extending the window to apply and encourage interested individuals to submit their application materials before the Sept. 30 deadline.
Applicants must live in New Mexico, preferably within Grant, Catron, Sierra, Socorro, Otero, or Lincoln counties. Members serve voluntarily for a four-year term and attend quarterly meetings, either in person or virtually. Travel costs for in-person meetings will be reimbursed.
The RAC is being reestablished under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act, which provides funding for schools, roads, and natural resource projects across rural counties. Once the committee is fully assembled, federal funds can be released for new local projects.
Committee members review and recommend Title II project proposals, which may include work such as noxious weed control, trail and road improvements, range and campground infrastructure, watershed restoration, and other projects that benefit public lands and local communities.
To ensure broad representation, the RAC includes members from three interest categories:
Category A – recreation, energy, minerals, timber, grazing, and other commercial land use interests
Category B – environmental organizations, dispersed recreation, wildlife, watershed, and historical interests
Category C – elected officials, tribal representatives, educators, and the public-at-large
