Local businesswoman Elizabeth Warren built a warehouse at 214 W. Yankie Street to meet a community need in 1911 when it bridged the hay and grain store and a Chinese grocer. The property was lovingly and accurately restored 30 years ago and is recognizable by 28-foot brick and stucco walls that are interrupted by double doors large enough for an early 1900s wagon to enter through. Then, two decades ago, The Seedboat was concepted by Nan and Alan Spragens as a center for the arts. The name, given by Alan, represents the seed of enlightened mind that every person has within them.
Many cultures center around the understanding that enlightenment is not just an individual pursuit but a communal one, built on shared values, traditions, and the collective striving for a good life. Understanding this, co-owners Jennifer Olson and Brent Steinberg dreamed up a sort of community house, where Grant County residents and visitors can together work, play, and learn together, moving toward a state of enlightenment while maintaining harmony with the greater region and world. Their genuine hope is that The Seedboat Collective unites people with differing backgrounds and perspectives so southwest New Mexico can advance productively and positively.
The Seedboat Collective is a community hub that is enjoyed on a daily basis by an active group of coworking members. Monthly memberships and day passes are suited to remote workers, solopreneurs, freelancers, and community organizers. The 2,500-square-foot coworking facility is outfitted with four private offices, a dozen dedicated desks, two meeting rooms, and community tables offering 16 open seats. Along with fast WiFi, a warm, thoughtful space promotes connection and keeps talent and out-of-state salaries in Grant County. The conference loft is available for even nonmembers to book, and reservations may be made online.
The Seedboat Collective venue is also available for special events, concerts, workshops, and meetings. Use of the 2,000-square-foot courtyard may be included. Booking requests can be made through The Seedboat Collective website, where a form prompts interested parties for details about their event.
Jennifer and Brent are keeping their vision for The Seedboat Collective broad and will adjust as community needs come to light and as opportunities arise. Their decisions will be values-based and made with consideration toward what will grow community and also support people in leading balanced lives that include work, play, enrichment, celebrations, and everyday social connections.![]()
