Silver City Pick It Up-Toss No Más Invites Community to Join Spook-tober Cleanup on Saturday, October 17th, 9 am-12 pm

The Silver City Pick It Up-Toss No Más program is inviting community members to get into the spooky spirit at a Spook-tober Community Litter Cleanup on Saturday, October 17th. This October, the fall temperatures feel terrific and the monsoon rains have created an explosion of wildflower blooms on the hillsides and in creek bottoms. Volunteers of all ages will enjoy celebrating this beautiful fall season and giving back to their community during a community cleanup. Just a few hours of effort can add up as we all work together to keep Silver City's streets, parks, waterways, and public spaces clean and litter-free.

Volunteers can attend this event from 9 a.m. to noon to hunt down litter and debris throughout the Silver City area. This month, volunteers are invited to dress up in a fun costume while they clean or simply bring their enthusiasm. This family-friendly cleanup is a fun way to spend a fall Saturday outdoors, inspire your neighbors, and make a tangible difference in our community. October may be the season of ghosts and goblins, but litter is one thing we don't want haunting Silver City, especially during Silver Schools' Fall Break and before trick-or-treaters hit the streets. Bottles, food wrappers, cardboard boxes, and other discarded waste can find its way into waterways, harm wildlife, and make our shared spaces less welcoming. By working together to clean up litter and prevent it in the first place, we can help keep our community healthy, beautiful, and ready for the seasons ahead.

Community cleanups are about more than picking up trash. Every piece of litter is part of a larger waste challenge, reminding us that the products we purchase and discard don't simply disappear when we throw them away. Cleaning up our community gives us an opportunity to see that waste firsthand, while also encouraging better habits around litter prevention, reuse, recycling, and proper disposal.

So grab your friends, family, costumes, and cleanup spirit, and help us scare away the litter this Spook-tober!

Volunteers should bring a refillable water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes, a sun hat, and sunscreen. Youth ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under 12 are not permitted on state highways during cleanup activities. The New Mexico Department of Transportation assists with hauling collected trash to the landfill.

Silver City Pick It Up-Toss No Más is a volunteer-driven program. Since October 2021, more than 1,254 volunteers have removed over 36,766 pounds of trash, debris, and recyclables from Silver City roads, neighborhoods, parks and open spaces, and riparian areas. Every cleanup makes a difference. Removing litter protects wildlife, keeps trash out of local waterways, improves the appearance and safety of public spaces, and helps build a culture in which keeping our community clean becomes everyone's responsibility.

Community members can also make a year-round commitment by adopting a roadway or waterway, participating in the Pick It Up-Toss No Más Business Pledge Program, or organizing their own neighborhood or community cleanup. Pick It Up-Toss No Más can provide guidance and, when available, supplies such as trash pickers, bags, and gloves to help community members organize their own events.

Monthly Pick It Up-Toss No Más cleanup events are held on the third Saturday of each month. Learn more, sign up to volunteer, and find information about litter prevention, recycling, solid waste disposal, the Business Pledge Program, and Adopt-A-Roadway and Adopt-A-Waterway opportunities at www.silvercitytossnomas.org.

Pick It Up-Toss No Más community cleanup events are sponsored by the Town of Silver City, New Mexico Clean and Beautiful, Silver City Watershed Keepers, Silver City Recycles, Silver City MainStreet, SWNMACT, Southwest Solid Waste Authority, Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation's Que Linda Program.
