Silver City, NM — August 10, 2026 —This January, local bird enthusiasts and scientists began the Southwestern New Mexico Bird Survey, a community science project to monitor bird populations long-term and track environmental changes across Silver City and surrounding areas.
In its first year, the survey invites volunteers of all experience levels to participate in identifying and counting bird species in natural areas selected to represent the different habitats in Grant County. Organized by the Bird Alliance of Southwest New Mexico (BASWNM), the local Audubon chapter, in partnership with ecologists and Western New Mexico University wildlife experts, the survey will play a vital role in gathering data that supports habitat preservation and fosters a deeper appreciation for local biodiversity.
"Birds are key indicators of environmental health," said Will Mora, coordinator of the Silver City Bird Census. "By participating, community members contribute to a larger understanding of how our ecosystems are changing and what we can do to protect them."
Participants can choose among seven survey locations throughout Grant County. Data from monthly observations are compiled into a publicly-available report housed on the BASWNM website.
The survey also serves as an educational opportunity, encouraging residents to learn more about the diverse bird species that inhabit the region and to improve their bird identification skills.
