Karen Lucille Hughes was born January 16, 1944 in old Santa Rita NM hospital (born in space). She was a true western woman through and through. Her life was full and varied and she excelled at everything thing she did. In her younger years she was a lifeguard, beautician, waitress at the Buckhorn. Back in the day Karen made several floats for the 4th of July parade, recruiting friends and family to ride through town. She then went into nursing, massage therapy and even dump truck driving at Phelps Dodge.
She was exceptionally creative and talented and loved making and painting pottery, leather working, carving, sculpting, beading. Her love for nature was profound as well as her love for horses, river rafting, hiking, camping, hunting, everything outdoors She was a true modern day pioneer woman. She loved her family deeply and they loved her.
Her parents Foy and Elva Hughes preceded her in death and she is survived by her daughter Angelique, son Roman Kilgore, grandson Aaron Fade and 9 other grandchildren, as well as 4 great grandchildren, and her sisters Polly Hughes and Miriam Hughes, and her "family" and amazing care staff at Genesis Memory Care center.
She passed away peacefully on September 12 surrounded by loved ones and with her son at her side. A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research.
