Leaders Armstrong & Sharer: New Mexicans deserve to hear both candidates for governor before they start casting ballots
SANTA FE, NM – House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong (R-Magdalena) and Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) today called on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland to agree to a debate with Republican nominee Gregg Hull before early voting begins on October 6.
Only one debate between the two candidates is currently scheduled. It is set for October 8 on KOB-TV, after early voting has already started.
"The lack of dialogue in this race is unprecedented for a New Mexico governor's race," Leader Armstrong said. "New Mexicans deserve to hear both candidates take a clear stance on the serious issues facing this state, not be left to guess where they stand. Allowing early voting to begin before a single debate has taken place is a disservice to every voter who takes this election seriously. That needs to change, and it needs to change now."
Leader Sharer raised the same concern.
"New Mexicans deserve the opportunity to make informed decisions about who they elect to lead their state," said Leader Sharer. "As an elected leader myself, I find it appalling that there is an intentional blockade of information for prospective voters and it's coming from the more fearful than 'fierce' candidate in this race." Sharer concluded, "You know who else wouldn't talk, Jeffery Epstein. What are you afraid of Deb?"
Armstrong and Sharer are calling on both campaigns to work together to schedule at least one debate before early voting begins so voters statewide have a full opportunity to hear from both candidates before making one of the most important decisions on their ballot.
