SANTA FE, NM – New Mexico House Republican leaders are calling on Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to convene an immediate special session to repeal the state personal income tax and provide permanent tax relief to New Mexicans.
The request comes after the Governor proposed a one-time $250 taxpayer rebate. In a letter to the Governor, House Republican leaders argue that with record state revenues and billions of dollars in reserves and trust funds, New Mexico has an opportunity to provide meaningful, long-term tax relief.
"New Mexicans do not need another temporary rebate. They need lasting relief," said House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong. "Eliminating the personal income tax would put more than $2 billion a year back into the pockets of New Mexicans and allow working families to keep more of what they earn."
House Republican leaders argue the tax can be eliminated without cutting recurring funding for education, health care, law enforcement, or other essential services.
"For years, New Mexico has had record revenues, yet too many families are still struggling to get ahead," said Republican Whip Alan T. Martinez. "We have a chance to make a permanent change that puts New Mexicans first, strengthens our economy, and makes our state more competitive."
"If the Governor and legislative Democrats are serious about making New Mexico more affordable, this is an opportunity to prove it," said Republican Caucus Chair Rebecca Dow. "New Mexico has the resources to provide permanent tax relief and build a stronger economy for the next generation."
The letter was signed by House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong, House Republican Whip Alan T. Martinez, and House Republican Caucus Chair Rebecca Dow.
