Santa Fe, NM — Senate Republicans are calling for immediate action to address ongoing fraud, waste, and abuse in New Mexico state government, formally requesting the creation of a new legislative oversight committee.

In a letter sent to the Legislative Council, including President Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart and Speaker Javier Martínez, Republican legislators outlined the need for a dedicated and transparent process to review findings from the Office of the State Auditor, ensuring accountability for taxpayer dollars.

"New Mexicans deserve to know that every dollar they send to Santa Fe is being used as intended," said Senator Crystal Brantley (R-Elephant Butte). "When audits uncover misuse of funds, those findings shouldn't sit on a shelf. The major findings from missing funds to inappropriate expenditures should be brought into the light, reviewed publicly, and acted on. This effort is about restoring transparency, accountability, and trust in state government."

The proposed committee would provide regular public briefings on audit findings, identify patterns of misuse across agencies, evaluate whether corrective actions are working, and develop reforms to prevent future abuse.

Republican lawmakers say the goal is simple: bring transparency to a system that too often operates without real accountability.

Lastly, if Democrats refuse to act, Republicans are prepared to move forward independently to ensure these issues are brought into the public spotlight. Expect future notice of a public task force hearing that addresses findings from the Office of the State Auditor.
