Six Mile Fire transitions to Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team
Acres: 396
Start date: May 8, 2026
Cause: Undetermined
Containment: 0%
Personnel: 171
Fuels: Short grass, brush, oak and pinyon/juniper
Location: 12 miles SE of Magdalena, NM
Operations: The Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Management Team assumed command of the fire today at 07:00am and is working closely with the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands. The Six Mile Fire exhibited minimal growth yesterday due in part to the effective use of aerial resources over the past several operational periods. Three crews were inserted into the fire area as logistical support continues to be established for personnel working in remote terrain, including plans for crews to remain near the fireline overnight. Medical resources remain positioned nearby to support firefighter safety and provide rapid emergency response capability if needed.
Crews are actively securing the fire's edge using direct suppression tactics while contingency planning continues for indirect containment features along trails and other strategic locations. Water tenders remain in place to support suppression operations. A structure protection group and a trail group have also been positioned near the Langmuir Observatory to assist with structure protection assessments and control features should the fire advance closer to the site.
Weather: A warming and drying trend is forecast the next couple of days. South winds will generally be less than 10 mph, but a few gusts up to 15 mph could occur both today and Tuesday afternoon.
Closures: A closure order is in effect for multiple trails within the fire area. Refer to the attached closure order, map, and the Cibola National Forest website for further details. https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/cibola/alerts .
Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the top priority. Fire equipment and personnel will be operating on area road systems, and the public should remain aware of current and upcoming area closures associated with suppression activities. Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting. The public is reminded that "If you fly, we can't!"
Smoke may be visible along Highway 60 as well as from Interstate 25. An interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/ allows you to zoom into your area to see live smoke conditions.
