Since 2008, Briana Zamora, a New Mexico State University graduate, has dedicated her career to public service as a member of the judiciary. A New Mexico Supreme Court justice since 2022, Zamora will return to campus as the March speaker for the 1888 Leadership Series. The free event will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the Health and Social Services annex.

This event is part of the 1888 Leadership Initiative, a leadership program for students at NMSU that began in summer 2025. NMSU President Valerio Ferme envisioned the program to help students build essential leadership skills. The program began with the 1888 Leadership Camp in August. The 1888 Leadership Series brings local, state, regional and national leaders to campus for workshops.

"We are delighted to welcome Justice Zamora back to New Mexico State University and are grateful for her willingness to share her leadership insights and career experiences with our student body," Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Tony Marin said.

Zamora has served at every level of the New Mexico court system, one of the few justices to achieve that feat. In 2009, she began her judicial experience at the Metropolitan Court. In 2012, Zamora was elected to the Bernalillo County District Court. In 2018, she was elected to the Court of Appeals. In 2021, Zamora was appointed to the New Mexico Supreme Court, following a nomination by a bipartisan Judicial Nominating Commission, and was elected in 2022. In 2024, Zamora was elected for retention to serve an eight-year term.

"I'm thrilled for the opportunity to be back on campus to share with students what I've learned about leadership, and equally excited that my alma mater has embedded such an important initiative into its culture," Zamora said.

As a justice, Zamora is the liaison to several commissions, including the Children's Court Improvement Commission, the Children's Court Judges Association, the Tribal-State Judicial Consortium and the Commission on Mental Health and Competency.

An Albuquerque native, Zamora earned bachelor's degrees in government and psychology from NMSU and a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
