The United States Senate Committee on Appropriations recently announced congressional funding for two projects in New Mexico State University's College of Health, Education and Social Transformation, allowing the college to continue leading the way in improving the quality of education in New Mexico.

With the help of U.S. senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, the College of HEST was awarded $480,000 for K-12 multicultural curriculum and professional development, and $250,000 for improving bilingual education.

NMSU associate professor Susana Ibarra Johnson is the primary investigator on the bilingual education project, "Leveraging Dynamic Literacy and Science of Reading Instruction in Bilingual Education Classrooms," while professor Dulcinea Lara is PI on the K-12 multicultural curriculum and professional development project, "Teacher Training for New Mexico's Multicultural Students."

"These two transformative projects illustrate the powerful impacts HEST researchers are creating for the state and region," said College of HEST Dean Rick Marlatt. "Drs. Ibarra Johnson and Lara are champions for New Mexico students, schools and communities, and we are delighted to celebrate these tremendous accomplishments with them."

The college is committed to developing educators who are highly qualified in content area knowledge and pedagogical skills, instructionally current with cutting-edge approaches such as structured literacy and inquiry-based learning; and competent across critical intersections such as cultural and linguistic responsiveness and relational exchange of knowledges.

Marlatt said the projects leverage the enormous talent and future of New Mexico's multilingual teachers and learners, and positions the state to continue great strides in literacy, academic success, workforce development and social mobility.
