It seems like every few months somebody is trying to scare us by saying some type of illness is going to kill us. It's been the equine flu, the monkeypox, ebola has made an appearance on the list recently. Measles because it was eradicated but now is making a comeback. Apparently a lot of us learned from COVID and don't trust the World Health Organization or the CDC. Or their friends in the media for that matter.
As we approach the midterm elections, the people that want Trump's candidates to lose are pushing a new one, the pneumonic plague. This one is deadly and could wipe out a significant portion of the world population. Apparently, somebody working at a biomedical lab in Russia broke a test tube containing the bacteria that infects someone and causes the plague. Haven't we heard this story before?
Understanding that this is Russia and they are not always transparent, local media outlets broke the story. Russian officials say the infected woman does not have pneumonic plague. 200 people that work in the area where she was are also being monitored and none of them have contracted the plague. They say she is not ill at all, but this is a precautionary quarantine. So, the reports from the media that talk about a plague spreading across Russia are not quite accurate. There's a surprise.
But let's assume that it was the bacteria that causes the pneumonic plague. The symptoms are very similar to having the flu or a severe cold. The problem with the plague is you must begin a course of antibiotics within 24 to 48 hours of becoming infected, or you'll likely die. The mortality rate for people that do not get immediate treatment is about 96%. If you take the antibiotics, the mortality rate drops to 17%. You can see the issue. Somebody thinks they have a normal cold or the flu and they're just going to drink liquids and take it easy for a day or two.
So, if this truly was the pneumonic plague, and it was spreading across Russia, even their government wouldn't be able to hide all the dead people. In today's world with multiple news sources and social media, even the Russian government would not be able to keep that story quiet. But the media needs something to scare us into compliance or to vote for their preferred candidate because of course Donald Trump is not doing anything to protect us from the plague.
