Silver City -- Silver City Police today arrested Abran Travis Grijalva, 37, of 400 N. Corbin Street, in connection with the March 29th shooting of a 17-year-old female. The shooting occurred near midnight at the corner of Market and Corbin streets. Grijalva allegedly saw the vehicle, in which the victim was a passenger, drive by his home, and fired multiple rounds, striking the young woman in the head. She was driven to Gila Regional Medical Center by the driver of the vehicle, whose identity has not been released. The vehicle was accompanied to GRMC by Police Sergeant Avery Crump, who then carried the victim into the emergency room.
Grijalva was arrested at 12:27 pm Wednesday by SCPD Patrol Officers Sean Ramirez and Corporal John Singleton, and is being held at the Grant County Detention Center on multiple counts: attempted murder; two counts of shooting at a motor vehicle; two counts of aggravated battery; tampering with evidence; and four counts of aggravated assault.
"I appreciate the many hours, hard work and dedication that all of the officers involved in this case have put in to help bring justice to the victim and to her family," said SCPD Chief Freddie Portillo. "It's been all hands on deck, and the investigation is ongoing. Espirideon Varela was arrested on March 29th on felony charges of firearm possession and probation violation, but contrary to some media reports, Grijalva has been arrested as the shooter in this case."
Detective Fernando Cardoza is the lead detective on the case, and is working hand-in-hand with the department's entire investigations unit, under the command of Captain Antonio Carrillo. Given that the investigation is ongoing, anyone with information is asked to please contact the SCPD at (575) 538-3723.
