DEMING, N.M. - On November 5, 2026, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving the Deming Police Department (DPD).
Agents learned that at approximately 4:29 p.m., DPD officers were dispatched to 220 Spruce Street in Deming following a report of shots fired. A responding officer observed the suspect, later identified as Jaime Aguilar (28), leaving the area and relayed that information over the radio to other responding DPD officers who initiated a foot pursuit. Aguilar ignored officers' commands to stop.
The pursuit continued to the area of 113 E. Spruce Street, near the Wells Fargo Bank. During the incident, three DPD officers discharged their duty weapons, striking Aguilar. Aguilar was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. A firearm was located at the scene.
Officers then located a deceased male back at 220 Spruce Street. The male was identified as Shawn Anderson (50).
No officers were injured during the incident. The homicide and officer-involved shooting remain under investigation by the New Mexico State Investigations Bureau.
The officers will not be identified by the New Mexico State Police. For information on their duty status or administrative actions taken, please contact the Deming Police Department.
New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney for review.
The New Mexico State Police act solely as a factfinder in officer-involved shootings and do not determine whether an officer's actions were justified. That decision rests with the district attorney's office.
