Join the volunteers and vendors at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site on August 1st and 2nd to celebrate and learn about the lives and habits of these energetic little flying jewels, the magnificent hummingbirds of our area. We'll have food, booths, children's activities, tours of the Mimbres archaeological site and museum, and more.
Starting around 7:30 - 8:00 am, ornithologist Bill Talbot and helpers will be capturing, examining, recording, banding and releasing hummers early in the day. This is always an exciting time, especially if the little gem is placed in your hands for release.
The midday heat stresses the birds, so we'll stop banding, but there will still be plenty to do throughout the day. The local Astronomy group who have held recent Star Watch Parties at the Mimbres Heritage Culture Site, will be set up to introduce the thrill of exploring the skies. Their telescopes will be set up with special filters enabling the visitors to do Solar Observation, watching the storms and eruptions on the Sun's surface.
The Heart of the Gila will be scheduling a variety of easy local hikes to introduce the flora and fauna to be found along the nearby Mimbres River. Be sure to stop by their vendor site to sign up for one or more of their Saturday and Sunday hikes.
Learn about the early Mimbres Mogollon who made this valley, including the Mimbres Culture Heritage site, their home for a thousand years by touring our Archaeological Site and Museum. Stop by our Museum to learn about the amazing characters who owned this homestead: Bert Mattocks, Benjamin Gooch, and Bert Mattocks.
We hope you will take the time to visit the booths of local organizations and check out original paintings, woodwork, jewelry, and fabrics crafted by local artisans.
Children's activities will be going on all day, both days!
And let's not forget the food! Come early for coffee and tea on the front porch or breakfast with food vendors. Stay for lunch, and then enjoy ice cream at the back door of the Museum. A perfect opportunity to take photos, relax in the shade of our front porch, and celebrate summer in the Mimbres Valley.
