(Silver City, NM) – The Silver City Public Library will host an author presentation on Friday, November 6, 3:00pm featuring Mary Hotvedt's new historical novel Unn's Saga.
Unn's Saga explores what happens when a 9th century "entity" becomes a lodger in the body of a fussy modern young woman. The woman's therapist, Dr. Ina Pelletier, finds her staid life upended by the appearance of this "Other" in her patient, the troubled but whiny R. Is R. having a psychotic breakdown or is this Unn person real?
Unn Ketilsdottir, known as Unn the Deep-Minded in the Icelandic sagas, wants to taste everything modern life has to offer, just as she did in her own times. She insists that Ina treat her also as a client and listen to her remarkable life story. Meanwhile, Unn forces R. to loosen up and change. This leads to a power struggle, and Ina watches them spiral toward disaster. Will Unn destroy R. out of pride?
Aiding Ina in understanding the world of the sagas is Dr. Snorri Grimmson, an Icelandic scholar. Is his attraction to Ina real or merely a way for him to get close to Unn? And who is the dark man who always seems to be watching?
Readers will be treated to two stories: The life of a Viking woman in the medieval North Atlantic and a contemporary comedy of errors in the world of psychotherapy.
Mary E. Hotvedt is a cultural anthropologist as well as a family therapist with long experience in practice, teaching, and training in both fields. She has a long-standing interest in the history of the very mislabeled "Dark Ages." Mary lives in Grant County with her husband. She can usually be found on a hiking trail or in her vegetable garden.
