SILVER CITY, NM — What might happen if, for a few moments, we stopped talking about peace and simply walked with it?
Unity del Corazón, in partnership with The Hearth, invites the community to PeaceWalk, a free indoor labyrinth experience on Thursday, September 10, from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at The Hearth, 1915 N. Swan Street, Silver City.
A 24-by-24-foot canvas labyrinth will transform The Hearth's Community Room into a place for quiet reflection and shared intention. Participants are invited to walk at their own pace, holding thoughts, prayers, hopes or intentions for peace within ourselves, peace in our relationships and community, and peace throughout our world.
An Ancient Path with a Timeless Invitation
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol and walking practice found in different forms across centuries and cultures. Unlike a maze, which is designed with choices and dead ends, a labyrinth has one continuous pathway leading to the center and returning outward again. Walking the labyrinth can symbolize a journey inward—quieting the mind, releasing what we carry, and becoming centered. At the center, we may pause in prayer, reflection, or simply in the stillness of being. The returning path invites us to "give it over" and carry a renewed sense of peace and awareness back into our lives.
Across time, walking the labyrinth has become associated with pilgrimage, contemplation, walking meditation, prayer and the human journey toward the center and back into the world.
For PeaceWalk, the labyrinth also represents something universal: many people walking one path, each bringing their individual hopes and intentions, while participating in something larger than themselves. As we walk, we bring our individual energy into a shared field of intention—raising the energy of peace through our awareness of the unity and Oneness that connects us all.
"Peace can seem like an enormous issue when we look at the world around us," said Rev. Kathleen Flynn of Unity del Corazón. "PeaceWalk brings the question closer to home: What does peace look like when it begins with me? We walk individually, but we do not walk alone. Each person brings an intention for peace into the greater whole."
Wendy Spurgeon, coordinator of The Hearth, sees the gathering as an opportunity for community connection.
"When people come together with a shared intention for peace, something important happens," Spurgeon said. "The Hearth is pleased to open its doors for a gathering where people throughout our community can come together, slow down, and hold that intention for one another and for our world."
PeaceWalk coincides with Unity's annual World Day of Prayer, observed September 10. This year's theme, "Love Is Alive," provides a fitting backdrop for a community gathering centered on peace, compassion and our shared humanity.
No previous experience with a labyrinth is necessary. Guidance will be available for first-time walkers. People of all ages, faith traditions, spiritual paths—or no particular spiritual tradition—are welcome.
Participants may arrive anytime between 2:00 and 6:30 p.m. and stay for as little or as long as they wish. There is no admission charge. The brief opening ceremony will start at 2:00 pm.
