Silver City, NM, February 23, 2026---The new mayor of Silver City, Simon Wheaton-Smith, will be the guest speaker at the PFLAG Silver City monthly support meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan.  The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.

The mayor has deep connections to southwest New Mexico and the Gila region. "My great grandfather came to Grant County in 1895, then to Mogollon where my grandmother Ernestine spent her early years, ending up in the Mimbres as did my Aunt Barbara.  My parents spent time there as I did.  My schooling was in England; my vacations were here.  I flew both freighters as well as for the airlines; then I joined the FAA from whence I retired."  In Silver City Wheaton-Smith has been involved in Public Works, served as the Town Clerk and on the City Council and, later on, in Planning and Zoning.  "I am very focused on processes and equal treatment for all," he says.  "I believe all demographic groups should be treated equally and with respect.  I abhor singling out any group; it takes all of us with our own perspectives to make a country."
