TylerTaylorOctober 11, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "When 14 New Mexico Congregations Tackle Sky-High Homelessness"

Being unhoused is now painfully common in America, but the complexity of the causes isn't appreciated. Addiction disorders, high medical debt, psychiatric conditions, escaping domestic violence, rising rents, stagnant wages, runaways and more are involved.

Española, New Mexico has long had very high rates of addictions and now is also deeply challenged by homelessness. But scores of people in the nearby communities of Los Alamos and White Rock have stepped up in the last two years to try to help. What have they learned? And how did Silver City help inspire this effort?

On October 11, Tyler Taylor, MD will discuss this challenging and remarkable experience. He's the Coordinator for the Interfaith Coalition on Homelessness, which consists of 14 congregations in three communities. This group of Unitarians, Mormons, Protestants, Jews, and Catholics are working together every month on eight to ten projects.

Tyler Taylor grew up in Birmingham, Alabama during the civil rights era. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College, in VA and did his medical training through the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

Dr. Taylor was in a small town family practice in Strasburg, Virginia for 21 years and Los Alamos, New Mexico for 17 years.

Since his retirement in 2018, he's been working on New Mexico healthcare reform, support for asylum seekers in Deming, and homelessness.
