The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, Mining and Minerals Division (MMD) will hold a public hearing on Freeport-McMoRan's application to revise and update the reclamation plan for the Chino Mine. The application includes changes to reclamation designs and water treatment plans, as well as the addition of a new waste rock stockpile.

The reclamation plan, also called the Closure Closeout Plan, is updated every five years as required by the New Mexico Mining Act. It outlines how Freeport will clean up and reclaim the mine site, including how it will manage and treat thousands of acre-feet of contaminated water after closure.
