Partnership aims to improve wildfire mitigation, streamline infrastructure maintenance, and strengthen coordination for rural electric service reliability
Santa Fe, N.M., May 29, 2026 — The USDA Forest Service and the New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association, in coordination with New Mexico's rural electric cooperatives, have developed a new statewide framework designed to improve consistency, coordination, and efficiency for powerline utility special use permits across National Forest System lands in New Mexico.
The initiative comes at a critical time as rural communities, electric cooperatives, and federal land managers face increasing wildfire risks, aging infrastructure challenges, and growing demands for reliable electric and fiber services across forested regions of the state.
In partnership with the 2026 Silver City CLAY Festival
Convergence is a juried exhibition of clay work from across the country. Convergence celebrates the moment when diverse perspectives, forms, and materials converge in a single shared space. Rather than centering on a single aesthetic or narrative, the exhibition welcomes a broad range of work, allowing unexpected relationships and quiet dialogues to emerge between objects. Jurors Bradley Klem, Stephanie Seguin, and Penelope VanGrinsven chose a variety of exciting works. The jurors will be present when awards are announced at the closing reception on Saturday, June 20th, from 5 -7 pm.

Pick It Up – Toss No Más Recognizes National Secure Your Load Day with Community Cleanup on Saturday, June 20th, 9 am – 12 pm at Gila Community Foundation parking lot
June 6th is National Secure Your Load Day, in remembrance of Matthew Reif, an Arizona man who died in 2006 when a piece of metal flew out of a truck bed and hit his car while driving. Unsecured trash and debris in vehicles or lying along our roadways are not just unsightly, they can be extremely dangerous for drivers, hikers, and bicycle riders on roads. In June, we are encouraging everyone to assess their vehicles before hitting the road. Do you have any loose car parts that could fly off while you're driving? Do you have any items, from a lightweight piece of cardboard or plastic to a heavy sheet of metal, that could blow out of your bed or cab while you're driving? Improving your habits and learning how to secure your load before you hit the road can save lives.
