Santa Fe, NM — Today on the House floor, Rep. Mark Duncan offered a sweeping amendment on HB 291 to deliver real tax relief to working families across New Mexico. His proposal included:

No tax on tips

No tax on overtime pay

No tax on Social Security income

Expanded foster care tax credits

Broad middle-class tax cuts

This common-sense plan would have put more money back into the pockets of hardworking New Mexicans. Instead, House Democrats voted it down on a strict party-line vote.

Once again, Democrats chose politics over people.

"At a time when families are being crushed by inflation, high housing costs, and rising grocery bills, House Democrats refused to give them even a penny of relief," said Rep. Duncan. "This amendment would have helped working parents, seniors, service workers, and small business employees. Democrats killed it without hesitation."

The amendment represented one of the most comprehensive tax relief proposals in recent memory, benefiting nearly every New Mexican who earns a paycheck, raises a family, or lives on a fixed income. It was a clear opportunity for lawmakers to show they are serious about affordability and economic relief.

Instead, Democrats made clear where their priorities lie.

"House Democrats love to talk about helping working families, but when it comes time to actually vote for real relief, they always say no," Duncan continued. "They protected big government spending and bureaucracy at the expense of everyday people."

By rejecting this amendment, Democrats voted against:

Service workers who rely on tips

Struggling foster parents

Seniors living on Social Security

Workers putting in extra hours to make ends meet

House Republicans remain committed to fighting for policies that reward work, strengthen families, and let New Mexicans keep more of what they earn.

"New Mexicans deserve leaders who put them first," Duncan said. "Today's vote proves House Democrats are more interested in growing government than helping families survive."

House Republicans will continue pushing for meaningful tax relief and holding Democrats accountable for their failure to stand with working New Mexicans.
