Silver City, New Mexico – In just a few days on October 18, local Southwest New Mexico residents will come together with millions of other Americans across the country in a nationwide day of nonviolent protest at the second No Kings Day of Action. There are currently thousands of events nationwide, with new convocations being added daily.
Participants here will meet at noon at four locations: Downtown City Hall, Visitor Center, Watts Hall, and WNMU Mustang Plaza, then march to and gather at Gough Park at 1:00pm.
"This October 18th rally stands in harmony with the National Day of Action and mass mobilization for 'No Kings.' We aim to exercise our First Amendment right and protest peacefully, without violence, against the increasing authoritarian power grabs, disregard of the United States Constitution, and disrespect for the rule of law by the current presidential administration," said Maree McHugh, one of the assembly's organizers.
She went on: "Our rally's focus seeks to bring the community together to share solidarity and speak out against threats to our civil and constitutional rights. The rally will highlight how we can work together to preserve free speech, civil rights, equality, and inclusion. We encourage participants to identify what is important to them, and move forward in community to foster mutual aid, encourage steady resistance, and build resilience. Let's emphasize what we can establish that the federal government cannot assail. Keep the lights on during dark times, together."
On June 14, more than five million people across all 50 states joined No Kings in the largest single-day protest yet against President Trump's authoritarianism. The October 18 Day of Action is the next step in this growing movement, channeling that energy into yet another coordinated, peaceful mobilization.
We're excited to join with other groups organizing the No Kings peaceful protests across the country including ACLU, American Federation of Teachers, Common Defense, 50501, Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, MoveOn, National Nurses United, Public Citizen, SEIU, among others.
