Clinton George Phillips
April 7, 1940 – August 4, 2025
Clinton George Phillips entered eternal rest on August 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife of 53 years, Vallie Phillips, and family, in his home in Hurley, New Mexico.
Clinton was born on April 7, 1940, in Ajo, Arizona to John Phillips and Roberta Turner Phillips. From a young age, he had a deep love for racing—starting with working alongside his father and racehorses, and evolving into dirt bike racing, dirt track car racing, and a lifelong passion for NASCAR. Whether watching races on TV or traveling with his sons and grandsons to see them live, Clinton was happiest when life had a little speed.
A true enthusiast of the open road, motorcycles were his preferred mode of travel, and he rode daily until recently. Clinton spent many years as a skilled mechanic at the corner shop on Hwy 180 and Hwy 152, where customers were always greeted with a cold can of soda pop and an even warmer story. He later worked in the local copper mines before retiring and opening his own shop, where he specialized in rebuilding transmissions and engines—a trade he took great pride in.
Clinton lived life in the fast lane, never slowing down for long. He had a deep care for everyone he met—if you ever crossed paths with him, he remembered you. His generous spirit, unforgettable stories, and sharp mechanical mind made him a beloved figure in the community and a pillar of his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Vallie Phillips, and his five children: Dwight (Julie) Phillips of El Reno, OK; Troy Phillips of Mimbres, NM; Aron (Haddy) Phillips of Hurley, NM; Shad Phillips of Keller, TX; and Stormie (John) Angell of Carlsbad, NM. Clinton was immensely proud of his children and the families they built.
His legacy lives on through 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, spread across the United States—each of whom he loved deeply and kept close to his heart, no matter the distance.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels. A Memorial Service will be held for Clinton at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Silver City. President Marion Call is presiding.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers include numerous family members and close friends, especially his sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons.
Clinton George Phillips will be remembered for his unshakable love of family, his need for speed, and a heart as big as the engines he rebuilt. He was one we will never forget.
