Silver City, NM – Gila Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is pleased to announce that El Refugio, Inc. has been selected as the recipient of its Q3 donation, funded through a portion of cafeteria sales. This initiative is part of the ongoing Gila Regional CARES program, GRMC's community outreach effort.
El Refugio (ERI) provides comprehensive support to individuals impacted by domestic violence through advocacy, education, and direct services. The organization operates Casa Carmel Shelter, a 24/7 emergency facility that offers 32 bed spaces for women, men, and children, providing a safe and welcoming environment for up to 90 days.
The shelter features a fully stocked kitchen, a children's play area, laundry facilities, and a healing garden designed to promote comfort and recovery. In addition to emergency housing, ERI offers a wide range of services including counseling, victim advocacy, domestic violence intervention programs, community outreach, and rapid re-housing support.
On Monday, September 29, 2025, GRMC senior leadership was given a tour of the facility by Rachel Sierra, Executive Director, and Elisa Chacon, Shelter Advocate. As part of the visit, Rosie Farrell, Counseling Director and play therapist, shared an overview of her work with the children.
"This donation will help us replace essential items in our shelter bedrooms," said Rachel Sierra, Executive Director of El Refugio, Inc. "There are no words to express what this means to us. The work we do is not easy, but it is rewarding work."
GRMC is grateful for the vital services El Refugio provides to the residents of Silver City and the surrounding communities. We admire their commitment to supporting individuals and families affected by domestic violence and are proud to stand behind their mission.
