Article on the event by Maureen Salaun
On Thursday, May 1st, United in prayer, a little more than 125 people attended the Grant County National Day of Prayer event at Gough Park.
Attendees gathered from many different congregations along with many who have no church affiliation, in order to praise and pray and lift their voices to honor God.
The National Day of Prayer has a history that dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress allotted a time for prayer informing a new nation. Over the years, many called for a day of prayer, including President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. President Harry Truman established the first National Day of Prayer in 1952 through proclamation. In 1988 President Ronald Reagan amended the law, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer. Since then, every United States president has proclaimed the event.
National Day of Prayer suggests several topics for people to lift up in prayer and a different person introduces each topic with scripture verses from the Bible.
"All across the United States in cities and capitals, this was going on," said Susan Brant, ticking off simultaneous events happening in Washington DC, Albuquerque, Deming and throughout the state of New Mexico.
“And here we are," said Susan Bryant, the Grant County coordinator for this special day, in Silver City. "It’s kind of neat to think that we’re all getting to do this together on this beautiful spring day!"
The day of prayer focused on seven areas for people to pray during the hour long gathering , which included music, the posting of colors by the Marine Corps league and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Those seven areas were regarding family, church, businesses and workplace, education, media influencers, military & first responders, and our government and nation, each with a different person leading the prayer. After each gave their prayer from the gazebo, the crowd was invited to say their own prayers for several minutes, some gathered in small groups and some held hands with the people next to them as they prayed. It was evident that many hearts were touched & we are grateful for that.
Susan quotes:
“Our goal is to have as many churches, open participants and people of all faith and persuasions that want to come and pray. We just believe that our voices are being lifted up in prayer that does not fall on deaf ears.”
“Pull back the scales from our eyes and the darkness of our hearts to see who was the One and only way, the Truth, and the Life. Draw every voice to cry out Jesus is Lord."
The closing hymn “Amazing Grace” was beautifully played on the bagpipes by Bobby Shaw.
Hope to see another wonderful gathering next year!!
