Caller advised that a female lives in the ditch right behind the RV park at the end of 13th Street/she has a small camp – blue tarp and tent. Caller advised his residents have been calling advising a female screams all hours of the night/she is there now and she is screaming. Officer - negative contact with anyone or camp at location.

August 18, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Silver Schools Mental Health Grant"

Earlier this year the Silver City consolidated school systems received a $6 million mental health grant from the U.S. Department of Education via the state. The program is intended to expand mental health services needed in local schools.

The money will be spent on hiring mental health professionals for every school in the district, which will enable them to help all students and staff. The grant will also help develop treatment programs which can be expanded to student and family support and resources, identify warning signs in students and work to create a positive school climate.

Joyce Barela, the mental health liaison, will explain the mental health issues facing students, and how the grant has been used to address those needs.

Childcare is available every Sunday. Zoey Cronin will lead a formal children's program on second and fourth Sundays.

Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.

The award-winning documentary, A Decent Home, will be shown at the Silco Theater in Downtown Silver City, Wednesday, August 14th at 6:00pm.

A Decent Home addresses urgent issues of class and economic (im)mobility through the lives of affordable homeowners living in land-lease communities who can't afford housing anywhere else. They are fighting for their dreams — and their lives — as private equity firms and wealthy investors buy up communities, making sky-high returns on their investments while squeezing every last penny out of the (im)mobile homeowners who must pay rent for the land they live on.

On behalf of Western New Mexico University and the Youth Mural Project, you are invited to join us for next week's Youth Mural Dedication occurring on Thursday, August 15th, 2024, beginning at 3:30 p.m. outside the Child Development Center of Sechler-Rhoades Hall on the Silver City campus.

The Camp Thunderbird board of directors invites the public to an open house to be held at the Mimbres Valley camping and retreat center on Saturday, August 17th.

Founded in 1947 by the Reverend Harold Johnson, the facility originally served as a Boy Scout camp, with buildings constructed by volunteers using logs harvested on the property. The facilities, with additions over the years, currently include three dormitory-style bunkhouses with capacities of thirty each, two rest room/shower buildings, caretaker residence, screened-in recreation building, large, covered gazebo, outdoor chapel and the main lodge, which can seat 125 people for meals. Other amenities include a fire pit, basketball/volleyball court, swing set and picnic tables with barbecues.

Currently operated by a non-denominational Christiamity-based 501(c)(3) non-profit, Camp Thunderbird is open to all and for multiple uses including camping, weddings, retreats, and reunions. “We’ve hosted a variety of groups over the years,” per Camp Thunderbird board president Shirley Mize, “including the Cobre High football team, which held opening practices at the camp, and touring cyclists.”
The open house will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm. Light refreshments will be served. There will be giveaways as well as t-shirt sales and a collection of camp historical photos will be on display.

A highlight of the open house will the introduction of a new Thunderbird-themed road sign, created by Camp Thunderbird board member and Silver City artist, Tom Manning.

The State of New Mexico is preparing to invest in water projects in southwest New Mexico. The Office of the State Engineer/Interstate Stream Commission is hosting a public listening session in Grant County to gather community input on the draft Pilot Funding Cycle Policy. Community water leaders are encouraged to attend to learn about potential funding opportunities.
