National Online Learning Day (September 15)
Today, on National Online Learning Day, we celebrate the power of digital education making learning accessible, flexible, and engaging for people everywhere. As the executive director of New Mexico Connections Academy, a full-time, tuition-free online public school serving students in grades 4–12 across the state since 2013, I've seen firsthand how virtual learning gives families access to a personalized and supportive education.
I encourage families to explore the flexibility and strong circle of support that online school can provide. If you're thinking of transitioning to virtual learning, consider the following tips to help position your child for success in an online environment:
Enrich their education experience with socialization
Friendships support problem-solving, communication, and emotional intelligence, all key to a strong academic foundation. Interpersonal relationships also help students develop social awareness, which is important for better understanding others, expressing empathy and building self-confidence. Many families think online schooling restricts socialization, but the opposite can be true. For example, our school offers opportunities for both in-person and virtual interactions with peers and teachers through clubs, field trips, local events and more.
Empower your child to take responsibility in school and life
Responsibility helps students take ownership of their education and day-to-day tasks, whether they are creating a successful online schedule or determining which extracurricular activities to join. At New Mexico Connections Academy, our full-time licensed school counselors work with students on academic goal setting, personal development and future planning. I encourage families to connect with our virtual school to learn about the resources we offer for developing these important skills.
Strengthen their self-management abilities
Adaptability, organization and decision-making are essential for success in online learning. Students must learn to prioritize and motivate themselves, especially when given flexible scheduling and the opportunity to learn at their own pace. At New Mexico Connections Academy, we encourage students to take charge of their educational journeys and offer future-ready college and career prep courses. Families can reinforce them at home by encouraging children to step outside their comfort zones and try new experiences to build confidence and self-management.
Education has never been one-size-fits-all. Online public schools like New Mexico Connections Academy offer families the freedom to choose a path where their child can feel seen, supported, and inspired to succeed. National Online Learning Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate that.
