New Mexico State University has once again been recognized among the nation's top institutions in the newly released 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings.

NMSU earned a place on the social mobility list (87 tied), reflecting the university's commitment to helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed. The university also ranked on the list of best undergraduate programs in nursing (160 tied), computer science (177 tied), psychology (196 tied) and business (254 tied).

"I congratulate all faculty, department heads and deans of those programs that moved up in rankings," said Lakshmi Reddi, interim provost. "Although U.S. News & World Report ranking criteria are popular and well-known, they do not encompass all the parameters related to student and faculty success. As an R1-designated land-grant university, NMSU offers best value to our students while providing outstanding opportunities to our faculty to excel in research and service endeavors."

NMSU also earned recognition for its online and graduate programs. Among online programs, the university ranked in bachelor's in psychology (25 tied), bachelor's programs for veterans (46 tied), master's in criminal justice (52 tied), bachelor's programs (84 tied), bachelor's in business (68 tied) and online MBA programs (202 tied).

At the graduate level, NMSU was ranked in nursing-anesthesia (80 tied), social work (95 tied), English (120 tied), earth sciences (124 tied), economics (126 tied), computer science (133 tied), fine arts programs (135 tied), engineering (145 tied) and public affairs (144 tied), along with several other programs recognized nationally.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings have been a trusted resource for more than four decades, helping students and families navigate the college search process. The 2026 edition evaluated more than 1,700 institutions using 17 measures of academic quality and student success, offering a data-driven tool to identify schools that best align with individual goals and values.
