New Mexico State University will kick off its celebrations for Latin Heritage Month later this month. Latinx Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The NMSU events aim to honor Latinx people and their culture and contributions to the nation's history. Many are collaborations between NMSU's Latin American Programs, Office of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, and other on-campus organizations. All Aggies are welcome to join the festivities. The scheduled events include:
"Get Ready for Cumbia Night," a free cumbia dance class, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Aggie Lounge at Corbett Center Student Union.
Regional Mexican singer Jacqie Rivera and Frontera Bugalú will take the stage at the Pan American Center Thursday, Sept. 18, for the "Cumbia Night II" concert hosted by the Associated Students of NMSU and Latin American Programs. Rivera is the daughter of the renowned "Diva de la Banda" Jenni Rivera. Admission is free to NMSU students with their Aggie ID cards. Tickets for the public are on sale at the Pan Am box office for $12 and through Ticketmaster for $22.10. Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
Paola Ramírez, a mother, dancemaker, improviser and performance activist, will present "The Power of Performance" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, in the second-floor auditorium at Corbett Center Student Union. Ramírez will teach performance exercises and techniques to help participants reimagine what is possible in their life and beyond.
Author Yasmín Ramírez will discuss her memoir, "¡Ándale, Prieta!," from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the second-floor auditorium at Corbett Center Student Union. Yasmín Ramirez's acclaimed book has earned many accolades, including a silver medal at the International Latino Book Awards and the 2023 Southwest Book Award by the Border Regional Library Association.
A panel of Latin students, faculty and staff will come together for "Voces Latinoamericanas" from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the third-floor Senate Chambers at Corbett Center Student Union. Panelists will discuss the importance of the Latin Heritage Month, the work and challenges ahead, and what forms of solidarity communities should engage with.
Daniel Alvarenga, a queer Salvadoran journalist, will present "El Salvador's Authoritarian Turn: A Harbinger for the Hemisphere" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, on Zoom. Email
Fans of video games and lotería are invited to join the first-ever "Cultural Game Night" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in NMSU's Esports Lab at Corbett Center Student Union.
Cassandro El Exotico, born Saul Armendariz, will visit NMSU's Las Cruces campus Wednesday, Oct. 15, for an event co-sponsored by NMSU's LGBT+ Programs. Cassandro is a renowned Mexican professional wrestler known for breaking barriers in the world of Lucha Libre for nearly 40 years. Cassandro will discuss his life and career from noon to 1 p.m. in the Corbett Center Student Union parking lot. The Luchador food truck will also be on site, providing free food.
Separately, Doña Ana Community College will kick off its Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations Tuesday, Sept. 16, with a book reading and fiesta from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the East Mesa Campus, DASR Commons, featuring author Denise Chávez. Chávez will read from her memoir, "A Taco Testimony: Meditations on Food, Family, and Culture" and will sign books. Food and music will also be provided.
