Santa Fe, NM —Yesterday, during the Courts, Corrections, and Justice Committee (CCJ), Chairman Joseph Cervantes (D-Las Cruces) likened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to that of the Klu Klux Klan (KKK). These inflammatory and divisive statements were made just hours before a horrific act of violence took place in Dallas, Texas where an assailant opened fire on an ICE Detention Facility. Details are limited at this time but this incident is a continuation of recent increases of violence against ICE agents around the nation.
In response to yesterday's inflammatory statements, Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) has issued the following statement:
"The kind of comments made by Senator Cervantes are putting our law enforcement officers at risk, as evidenced by recent attacks against them." The Senator continued, "These officers are doing what they've always done, under both Republican and Democrat administrations. And they must be prudent about their own protection, because even the families of these agents are now being put in harm's way due to doxxing and public calls for violence. The rhetoric designed to get ICE agents killed MUST stop. It's shameful. Have we learned nothing from the assassination of Charlie Kirk? Senator Cervantes, it's time to stand down."
