NMSU receives nearly $2.5 million in state funding for STEM graduate scholarships

The New Mexico Higher Education Department has allocated nearly $2.5 million to fund scholarships for graduate students from New Mexico studying science, technology, engineering or math at New Mexico State University.


 
The funding, which will be dispersed over three academic years, is part of a $10 million distribution from NMHED to graduate degree-granting state universities in New Mexico for graduate students in a STEM-related program. Eligible students will receive an award amount no greater than $7,200 per academic year.
 


To be eligible for the scholarships, students must have graduated from a New Mexico high school and enrolled full time in a master’s or doctoral degree program.

NM BLM invests $1.2 million in financial assistance to reduce wildfire risk, increase awareness in New Mexico 

 

SANTA FE, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico State Office today announced that it has awarded a new financial assistance agreement to New Mexico Counties for community wildfire risk reduction, planning, and outreach. The more than $1.2 million award is using funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve the wildfire resiliency of our nation’s lands and protect homes and businesses from increasingly extreme fire seasons being driven by climate change.  

 “This investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law enables us to continue partnering with New Mexico Counties, a partnership that began in 2005, to reduce wildfire risk in and near communities statewide,” said BLM New Mexico State Director Melanie Barnes. “The projects included in this award will continue this work, while stimulating local employment and business opportunities.”

NMSU honors faculty for excellence in teaching at fall 2023 convocation

As New Mexico State University kicked off a new academic year, nearly 200 faculty and staff members gathered on the Las Cruces campus to honor a group of colleagues for excellence in teaching.


 
NMSU bestowed several prestigious awards during the university’s fall 2023 convocation Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Atkinson Recital Hall. In all, six faculty members from across the NMSU system received awards. 


 
“I particularly want to say how much we appreciate those who are being recognized today,” NMSU interim President Jay Gogue said in his opening remarks. “I salute new faculty, those who have been promoted, and those who will be honored today for teaching awards.”


 
In separate remarks, Alan Shoho, NMSU’s provost and chief academic officer, said the turnout for Tuesday’s convocation was the largest in recent memory. The gathering included more than 70 new faculty and newly promoted faculty.

NM Regional Recreation Centers and Quality of Life Grant

SANTA FE - New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) announces the New Mexico Regional Recreation Centers and Quality of Life Grant. During the 2023 Legislative Session, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation appropriating $40M for projects statewide to plan, design, furnish, equip, and construct regional recreational projects that contribute to the quality of life for regional residents.

“This funding has the potential to make a positive impact on the well-being of residents by providing resources to establish or enhance recreational centers, which often become essential focal points within the community,” said DFA Cabinet Secretary Wayne Propst. “We hope local entities across the state take advantage of unique opportunities to create or improve community spaces for social interactions and community engagement.”

Museum offers free admission on Aug. 26, 2023

The public can experience the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum for free on Aug. 26 as part of Community Appreciation Day.


Who: The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum and the Friends of the Museum.

What: The annual Community Appreciation Day and the 25th Anniversary celebration of the opening of the Farm & Ranch Museum. The day includes the Parade of Breeds cattle program, pony rides for children, a plant sale, a craft activity, and food trucks. Guests can tour all of the Museum’s exhibits, including: The Dairy Spot: Discovery Center, Riding Herd with Billy the Kid: The Rise of the Cattle Industry in New Mexico, Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets, Antidotes: Seeing Beauty, Finding Connection, Beyond the Farm: Groundbreaking Agriculture, Wheels & Gears, and much more. Visitors can also check out the Museum’s livestock, including six different breeds of cattle, horses, sheep, and a donkey.
