Kim O'Connell, associate professor and director of the athletic training program at New Mexico State University, was recently inducted into the New Mexico Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame, the third woman ever to earn the recognition.
O'Connell graduated from NMSU in 1994 with a degree in athletic training education. In 2002, she was named assistant director of the NMSU Athletic Training Education Program, and since then has served in several capacities until she was named program director in 2018. In all, she has supervised and taught more than 150 athletic training program students, many of whom are now athletic trainers, including several who work with major league teams.
"It surprised me, I was definitely shocked," O'Connell said. "This recognition is deeply meaningful to me, especially as women have started to make inroads in the field that was very male dominated when I started."

Longtime Las Cruces artist Kathy Morrow has been dedicating most of her mornings these last seven months to sharing her talent and creating a large mural made of rocks that's displayed right in front of New Mexico State University's Golf Course. Her art reflects the beauty of local wildlife.
"I grew up on Indian reservations, so there's an influence there," she shared. "My art is southwest and Native American inspired."
Before displaying her art at the NMSU Golf Course, Kathy initially collected and created designs with colored rocks on the Tortugas dam, which received a lot of attention.
"The community had started joining in, the walkers on the dam. They'd ask what color rock I needed, and I'd say I was looking for yellows," she said. "Pretty soon there would be big piles, backpacks, bags, and then eventually – pickup trucks full of yellows. Whatever the color was."
As the mural grew over the span of five years, Kathy said she eventually had to relocate her work due to the future usage plans for the location.

New Mexico State University's College of Business recently accomplished another milestone by receiving an extension of accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
"The business and accounting programs in the College of Business at NMSU have had their AACSB accreditation extended for another five-year period," said Bryan Ashenbaum, dean of the College of Business. "AACSB accreditation is the 'gold standard' of business and accounting accreditation, with just under 6% of worldwide business programs holding it."
The extension was approved and concurred with by the Continuous Improvement Review Committee and Accounting Accreditation Committee and was also ratified by the Board of Directors. The College of Business received the news in late June.
