The Mustangs received 53 total points, landing just behind Eastern New Mexico (88) and within reach of Midwestern State (139). Angelo State claimed the top spot with 23 first-place votes and 292 points, followed by Central Washington (257) and UT Permian Basin (229).
Now entering his third season at the helm, WNMU Head Coach Billy Hickman is focused on internal growth, not outside expectations.
"We're not in the business of proving polls right," Hickman said. "We've got experienced guys in key spots, a hungry locker room, and we're focused on playing our brand of football. The rest will take care of itself."
Angelo State quarterback Braeden Fuller was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, with the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year expected to be announced soon.
The Mustangs will kick off the 2025 campaign at home on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m. against regional rival Adams State at Ben Altamirano Field.
