NEW MEXICO AUGUST 7 - Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham took a cheap shot when responding to NM House Minority Leader Gail Armstrong clearly missing Armstrong's point.
RPNM Chairwoman Amy Barela weighed in:
"Once again, Governor Lujan Grisham has chosen to misrepresent the facts and deflect responsibility for the ongoing public safety crisis under her administration. Let's set the record straight:
Republicans have been fighting for the safety of New Mexicans first—not just for months, but for years. Our lawmakers have consistently introduced legislation to increase penalties for repeat offenders, fund law enforcement, combat fentanyl trafficking, and address the addiction crisis at its roots. Sadly, these efforts have repeatedly been blocked or ignored by the Democrat-controlled legislature and the Governor herself.
The Governor claims she is ready to work with both parties, yet her actions suggest otherwise. Rather than holding violent criminals accountable, she has prioritized unconstitutional regulations on law-abiding citizens. Instead of enforcing immigration laws, this administration continues to put illegal immigrants above New Mexican citizens—diverting resources away from those who need them most. Programs like Medicaid, education, and public safety are now at risk of underfunding as the Governor focuses on aiding those who are here unlawfully.
Public safety is not a partisan issue—it is a leadership issue.
The Governor's failed policies have emboldened repeat offenders and overwhelmed our criminal justice system. Her administration turns a blind eye to Mayor Keller's ineffective "tough on crime" rhetoric, while crime runs rampant in Albuquerque and beyond. Deploying the National Guard as street counselors while refusing to support meaningful enforcement sends a clear message: lawlessness is tolerated.
Furthermore, the Governor's crime data is misleading. Crime isn't going down—it's being underreported, miscategorized, or dismissed entirely. New Mexicans know the truth because they live it daily: theft, assault, and drug-related crimes are at an all-time high, and offenders face little to no consequences.
If the Governor is serious about public safety, we welcome her to the table. But stop the political games. Focus on what truly helps New Mexicans:
-
Supporting law enforcement,
-
Defending our laws,
-
Protecting our communities,
-
Improving education,
-
Rebuilding our broken behavioral health and judicial systems, and
-
Rebuilding CYFD so we stop losing innocent babies under their care.
Until then, RPNM will continue to lead the charge in fighting for a safer New Mexico—for all citizens, not just the ones who fit a political narrative."
