Virtual Gila Native Plant Society meeting, “Post-fire Status of Goodding’s onion (Allium gooddingii) in New Mexico” — Presentation via Zoom by Daniela Roth, New Mexico State Botanist
The Gila region is home to a number of rare plants. One of those is the delicate Goodding’s onion (Allium gooddingii), a plant species only found in Arizona and New Mexico. The majority of the populations occur on the Gila National Forest and the adjacent Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona. Since 2006 over 95% of known locations in AZ and NM have burned in seven different wildfires. Post-fire studies have shown that although plants largely survive the direct impacts of the fires, long term survival is questionable due to drastic changes in habitat, post-fire floods, and post-fire rehabilitation efforts.
No one is better qualified to bring us up-to-date on the status of this rare plant than Daniela Roth. Daniela is the New Mexico State Botanist and Program Manager for the Endangered Plant Program located within the Forestry Division of the Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Oregon State University in Botany and Wildlife and a Master‘s Degree in Fire Ecology. From 1997 to 2009 she worked for the Navajo Natural Heritage Program, promoting rare plant conservation and documenting rare plant occurrences from the backcountry of the 17-million-acre reservation of the Navajo Nation. Prior to coming to New Mexico, she worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the conservation and recovery of rare and endangered plants of southern and central Utah. She has been with the New Mexico Endangered Plant Program since 2012, where she continues her work on endangered plant conservation issues and documentation.
As always, the public is welcome. Those interested in joining in the Zoom presentation at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 19, at 7:00 pm, should send a request for a link to gilanative@gmail.com.
