"The Change Game,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Sunday, June 12, 2022, 10:00am |
Jeff Goin of the Lotus Center will address the idea of changing our internal habits. Humans are creatures of habit. They are habituated to their morning, daily, and monthly routines.
“Noteworthy is that when we talk about our habits and routines, we are typically referring to our external routines: where we go, what we do, and when we do it. What we often don't consider are our internal habits, our emotional habits. Many of us are also habituated to responding to certain events with certain emotions; to the extent that we perceive an external event as negative, our associated, habitual feeling will also be negative, and painful,” Goin said.
“What if we could establish a new habit, one that started with changing our perception of a certain type of event from negative to neutral, or even positive? Doing so would also change our habituated feeling response from negative to neutral, or even positive. What an exciting prospect to consider,” he continued.
Jeff Goin has been teaching and leading non-denominational meditation in Silver City, on a volunteer basis, since 2008. His classes provide practical ideas and methods for improving relationships, overcoming anger, dealing with stress and, in general, establishing and maintaining a peaceful state of mind. Goin is the founder of Lotus Center, and a co-founder of Single Socks, a non-profit thrift store that has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-hunger programs in Grant County. He has been a practicing Buddhist since 1999.
There are speakers on the patio if you wish to enjoy the service outside.
This Sunday there will be a Children’s Religious Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years old and above to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridge, a former CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on the theme of “Letting Go” this Sunday.
UUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA Guidelines:
We will not be serving food or drinks in the building until further notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoors and out, except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refreshments on the patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.
