“Circles of Vulnerability,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City
Sunday, July 24, 2022, 10:00am |
Jennifer Johnston will discuss using Brené Brown's book "The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are" as a post-Covid “life raft.”
Johnston will explain what “circles of vulnerability" are, and how they are our best mental health buoy and our best buffer against feelings of shame.
“We must have these circles of vulnerability, but who should we include in them?” she asked.
Johnston said that Covid had a profound effect on people’s mental health and that during Covid, some of us who thought our mental health was strong discovered there were holes, and that was scary.
And that during Covid, some of us who knew our mental health was already vulnerable became quite destabilized.
She added, “During Covid, some of us who found regular life a bad fit, started to find home life--introspective life—much more preferable. Losing that, this next year, seemed to be walking backward.”
“Which one are you? Would you like to talk about the paradox of how to realistically embrace who you really are, while at the same time believing that living the life you want is possible?” Johnston said.
Jennifer Johnston is a former mental health counselor, a current psychology professor, and a vulnerable person with imperfections, navigating her best life.
