“Engaged vs Educated: The Evolution of an Elected Official,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Sunday, August 28, 2022, 10:00am |
Politicians have long used emotion to sway public opinion – Aristotle discussed emotion as one of the pillars of rhetoric. But emotion as persuasion works another way too. Highly charged emotions, whether inflamed by truth or by misinformation, are used by vocal citizens as a way to press elected officials to take action in a way those citizens want. Most of us have read or heard news about groups shouting down elected officials, school board representatives, and others in positions of public service.
This Sunday Alicia Edwards will discuss her experience of how emotional outrage is taking over rational thought, discussion, and action.
Alicia Edwards is the Coordinator for Healthy Kids Healthy Communities Grant County and is the former Executive Director of The Commons. She is currently serving her second, four-year term on the Grant County Board of Commissioners. She is also a published poet, author, photographer, and sculptor whose art and images are in private collections in the US, Canada and England. Edward’s idea of adventure is a backpack, a one-way ticket to anywhere and has traveled in all 50 states and five continents. Her favorite conveyances for travel are her feet, a bicycle, or a sailboat.
There are speakers on the patio if you wish to enjoy the service outside.
This Sunday there will be a Children’s Religious Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years old and up to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridge, a former CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on the theme of “Nature” this Sunday.
UUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most recent UUA Guidelines:
We will not be serving food or drinks in the building until further notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoors and out except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refreshments on the patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.
