International Archaeology Day to be Celebrated at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site
Sunday, October 16, 2022, 11:00am |
The public is invited to visit the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site Saturday, October 16, 2021. Beginning at 11 AM you may experience archaeology with hands-on activities and learn some history of the Mimbres Valley. Sponsored by the Grant County Archaeological Society and the Imogen F. Wilson Education Foundation volunteers, start with a cup of Cowboy Coffee and a homemade biscuit. Then you can grind corn on a matate, make a clay pot, whirl a bullroarer and make string out of yucca fiber. At 11:30 hear the tragic story of the MURDER ON THE MIMBRES. At 1 PM, visitors can take a walking tour of the Mattocks Archaeological Site led by archaeologist Marilyn Markel. The walk is less than a half mile and on easy terrain. All ages are welcome. Be dressed and prepared for any kind of New Mexico weather. The museum and gift shop will be open. Bring a lunch and picnic under the museum’s veranda. The event is free and donations are welcomed. The Mimbres Culture Heritage Site is located a block off highway 35 on Sage Drive – just past the old Mimbres Café. For more information, call Marilyn Markel at 575.536.9337.
